How to grow your beard faster, naturally

Discover three ways to get your beard to grow

Growing a beard is a labor of love; you have to get beyond the initial awkward stage before you start to see results.

But there are some things you can do to help speed up this process and to make it a more enjoyable journey.

A two-pronged attack is called for: you will need to make sure you are treating your beard in the right way, by using specifically tailored beard butter, oil, wash, conditioner and pick.

Read: five things you need to know before starting on your beard journey

And you will also need to consider your health. After all, beard growth is a reflection of your overall well being.

1. You are what you eat

To promote hair growth, get more of the following in your diet:

Protein

To promote beard growth, you will need to eat complete-proteins. These are the nine essential amino acids, that your body cannot make on its own. They are more readily found in animal sources, as most plant sources are incomplete proteins.

Here are some of the best animal sources:

  • Beef
  • Chicken
  • Eggs
  • Bone broth
  • Fish
  • Yoghurt/kefir

The best plant sources for complete proteins are:

  • Quinoa
  • Soy
  • Hemp seeds
  • Chia seeds

The following sources are also great, but are incomplete proteins:

  • Lentils
  • Black beans
  • Green peas
  • Chickpeas

Fruits and Vegetables

You might not want to admit it, but Grandma was right, you need to eat your fruits and veggies to grow big and strong.

She might not have mentioned beard growth but the same is true; if you want a healthy beard, you will need to eat a wide range of fruits and vegetables, of all different colors.

Their fiber is essential for a healthy gut – and you guessed it – a healthy gut means a healthy you and better beard growth.

Great sources include:

  • Green peas
  • Bell peppers
  • Cooked spinach
  • Squash
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Kiwis
  • Avocados
  • Raspberries

Nuts and Seeds

Nuts and seeds are a great source of essential vitamins, healthy fats and minerals, required for beard growth, such as zinc and omega-3.

Try:

  • Cashews
  • Hemp seeds
  • Chia seeds
  • Sunflower seeds
  • Pumpkin seeds
  • Brazil nuts (one a day is enough – otherwise you could risk selenium poisoning – not fun!)

2. Get moving

Exercise has multiple benefits when it comes to beard growth.

Firstly, it boosts your blood flow and circulation, meaning that more nutrients and oxygen reach your hair follicles.

Aim for at least 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise (e.g., walking), three times a week.

In addition, exercise lowers stress levels by reducing the amount of stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol and stimulating your ‘feel-good chemicals’, aka endorphins.

Some of the best stress busters include, going for a walk in nature and Pilates.

3. Catch some zzzzs

It’s not called beauty sleep for nothing!

When you are asleep, you give your body the opportunity to renew and restore itself. Good quality sleep gives your body the chance to make more of the human growth hormone, as well as helping with melatonin production (which is linked to hair growth).

To aid sleep, either add magnesium salts to your bath or foot spa. This not only promotes relaxation; it also has the added benefit of activating vitamin D.

A lack of vitamin D can lead to hair loss.
